Yesterday at 1150 hours Cumberland County Department of Public Safety dispatched the Mechanicsburg Fire Department and mutual aid companies to the 100 block of E Main Street in the borough for smoke in a building. Engine 129 responded with members on station and all 3 Chiefs immediately and found smoke pushing from the windows and doors of the structure as well as alarms sounding inside. Command immediately upgraded the box to the working fire dispatch. E129 secured its own water and crew stretched a 200’ in search of the fire. Crew from E129 and E237 from Naval Support Activity - Mechanicsburg found a mattress on fire on the 3rd floor. Smoke was thick and banked on all 3 floors. Crew from E237 (Navy) completed primary searches with negative findings. All occupants were out of the building with no injuries. Thanks to all our mutual aid partners for their assistance. Had this incident happened 1 day prior on Jubilee Day, due to the tremendous participation of our mutual companies at our Jubilee Day Prep training, all companies would’ve been prepared for the difficulties associated with large crowds and lack of access to Main Street. The Mechanicsburg Fire Department had 17 members on the roster.
